# February 2025: A Massive Loss for the Malayalam Film Industry

The Malayalam film industry has produced several masterpieces over the years, with films like *Aavesham, Premalu, Manjummel Boys,* and *The Goat Life* gaining both critical and commercial success. However, February 2025 turned out to be a challenging month for Malayalam cinema, leading to a substantial financial setback for the industry.

## Huge Losses in February 2025

In February alone, 11 Malayalam movies failed at the box office, resulting in a staggering ₹150 crore loss. So far in 2025, only *Rekha Chithram* has emerged as a significant hit. Starring Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan, this film received positive reviews but managed to collect just ₹50 crore at the box office.

Apart from *Rekha Chithram*, no other Malayalam film released in the first two months of 2025 was able to capture the audience’s attention. Between January and February 2025, a total of 45 Malayalam films were released, out of which only two managed to generate decent earnings.

## February Box Office Report

In February 2025, the Malayalam film industry suffered a loss of around ₹52 crore. According to Kerala Film Producers’ Association President G. Suresh Kumar, a total of 17 films were released during this month, with a combined production budget of approximately ₹75.23 crore. Unfortunately, these films collectively earned only ₹23 crore at the box office.

A detailed list of box office performances was shared by the Kerala Film Producers’ Association. Among them, *Love Dale* turned out to be the least profitable film, earning just ₹100 despite a budget of ₹1.6 crore. Meanwhile, movies like *Romance, The Ved,* and *Pentakilli* managed box office collections of ₹4 crore, ₹3.5 crore, and ₹0.5 crore, respectively.

The only slightly successful film of February 2025 was *Officer on Duty*, which had a production budget of ₹13 crore and earned ₹11 crore at the box office. On the other hand, *Aatma Sahu*, made with a ₹1.5 crore budget, collected only ₹30,000. *Rekku*, which also had a ₹1.5 crore budget, earned just ₹55,000, while *Randam Yavan*, produced at ₹0.5 crore, managed to collect only ₹80,000.

## January 2025: Another Disastrous Month

The situation in January 2025 was no different, with 28 Malayalam movies releasing and causing industry losses amounting to ₹110 crore. When combined with February’s losses, the total damage to the Malayalam film industry in the first two months of 2025 stands at approximately ₹155 crore.

## What’s Next for Malayalam Cinema?

The unprecedented failure of so many films raises concerns regarding the future of the Malayalam film industry. With massive losses piling up, filmmakers and producers need to rethink their strategies to ensure better box office outcomes in the coming months.
